In reply to the discussion: West Virginia drops gay marriage ban [View all]Behind the Aegis
(55,941 posts)I have lived here off and on since 1999, but the state is very conservative. Tulsa has some very liberal blood, and there are some other areas too, mostly with universities, but this is a VERY religious state. I about shit my pants and drove off the road when I was driving back from OKC one time because once you hit Edmond, there is a 4-story cross on the side of the highway. Because of the time of day/night, and the fact it was lit, the sun hit in a way that, at first glance, made it look like it was on fire! Gay Jew sees giant burning cross?! Yeah, I was a little freaked out, til I realized it wasn't on fire and part of church. The only other time I was that freaked out on an Oklahoma highway was when we were, again, coming home from OKC and saw the tornado hunters pulling off the road, only to realize a tornado was forming above us on the highway. Who knew a 1987 Pontiac could do 100 miles an hour?! It probably normally doesn't, but it did that day!
