89. 10/20 Update: Suicide attempt and note from Koppenhaver

IBTimes.com: (A) corrections officer...discovered (Koppenhaver) in his cell with a piece of linen tied to his bed and around his neck. He was described as being purple in the face and unresponsive. The officer cut the cloth away and the former fighter began breathing again...

The Raw Story: In the note, War Machine — born Jonathan Koppenhaver — apologized to his friends and family for the violent beating and sexual assault of Christy Mack. He begins with a quotation from the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche — “to die proudly when it is no longer possible to live proudly” — before bragging that despite the fact that he’s dead, he “experienced more in my short life than 5 average men combined.”

War Machine then tells the woman he’s charged with having beaten and raped, “I loved you more than freedom,” and that he forgives her for having “cheated” on him after they had broken up. “I forgive you,” he wrote, “please forgive me.” Using language associated with the Men’s Rights Movement, he implores his brother to “keep alpha male sh*t alive.” He tells his friends he loves them, writing “may my strength be with you.”

All of this sharing of his strength and Men’s Rights bromides, however, left War Machine “crying like a lil’ b*tch.” The case against him, he wrote, is “f*cking ridiculous.” “They wanna charge me with battery and (domestic violence)? Fine, do it, but don’t railroad me with B.S. fantasy charges...I’m a good person with a huge heart,” he continued, “and everyone who knows me know that, especially Christy,” whose face he broke, teeth he knocked out, and liver ruptured — and who he suggested will be pressured by “her scumbag agent” to testify against him for money.

He concluded his portion of the letter by asking its intended recipients “to remember me for my times of strength,” and noting that “society has killed men, I was never meant to live in this era anyway. Follow your dreams and think for yourselves.” War Machine signed off with another quote from Nietzsche, “verily, I often laugh at the weaklings who think themselves good because they have no claws.” He has been in medical isolation on suicide watch since he attempted to take his own life, and is due in court for a preliminary hearing on the 32 charges against him on November 14, 2014.

MMA News: It is one thing to catch a case when you set out to commit a crime, but catching a case when you have nothing but good intentions in your heart is just so hard to accept. The severity of the charges makes it that much worse.

They wanna charge me with battery and DV? Fine, do it, but don’t railroad me with B.S. fantasy charges like: rape! Attempted murder! Kidnapping! And burglary! It’s ****ing ridiculous. And it’s making it impossible for justice.

Entering a home where you do not live without consent and committing a crime is grounds for being charged with burglary. In Nevada, not allowing someone to call the police or leave a residence is grounds for being charged with kidnapping (for which OJ Simpson is serving 8-30 years). The probability that you would have continued to beat Christy if she hadn't escaped is grounds for being charged with attempted murder. And you're not being charged with rape, but with "open and gross lewdness." Christy says you told her that you INTENDED to have sex with her whether she wanted to or not -- but you couldn't, to put it charitably, "get started." And you call yourself an alpha male!

Unfortunately, War Machine is right about one thing: If he can convince his jury that Christy had sent him too many "mixed signals" about the status of their relationship, or that he'd purchased an engagement ring because they'd reunited, they really could decide that his reaction been "provoked" and he had not acted "unreasonably."
