A Gallup Texas Poll released Wednesday found that among people who say they are likely to vote, the candidates each received 44 percent of the preferences. Two weeks ago Mr. Williams had a 10-point lead among the respondents in a similar poll. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

A Mason-Dixon Texas Poll released today found Mr. Williams with 45 percent to Ms. Richards's 43 percent. The edge was within the margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points. The number of people giving Mr. Williams an unfavorable rating jumped to 41 percent from 29 percent in a similar poll two weeks ago. Ms. Richards's unfavorable rating remained stable at 43 percent.


Every recent poll shows Wendy Davis down by 10-plus points. I'd love for her to win, but the polls haven't broken her way. They were breaking Richards way toward the end of the 1990 election.
