I had an additional duty to help soldiers file their taxes....and we were given a crash course by IRS employees. At that time, Ft Riley allowed its soldiers to wear uniforms off post. Often we would wear them to the gas station, grocery store, etc when we left post and headed for home. I specifically remember this, because of the tax implications - since the uniform was alowed off post, it was not strictly a work uniform...and cost to buy, clean etc were not deductible.

Anyway - in most cases there is nothing at all inappropriate about wearing a uniform while not on duty - and you should not assume things you really don't know.
