(31,849 posts)I think this belief is their last grasp on their rapidly waning delusion.
Imagine being told all your life: "Your economic out-come is up to you; If you stay in school, get a good education, work hard, and make good and wise decisions, you will make it in this America ... it's the American Dream. If you fail, it's because you, like those other losers, did not work hard enough or weren't smart enough."
Now, imagine you are 50 years old and have lived this prescription for success ... you stayed in school, you worked hard, and you choose to make wise decisions as evidenced by your driving a 15 year old car and living in a not so nice part of town; but what little you had in the bank is gone because you have not gotten a raise in 5 years, your 401K was depleted when your wife lost her job, and despite your taking a second job, you are still struggling to make your mortgage, and you are still one missed paycheck from financial ruin ...
Now, factor in the fact that you have spent the last 30 years watching less educated, less smart, less hard-working others, pass you by.
Now ask yourself ... Is it easier to continue believing what you have been told all your life; or acknowledge that you have been living a life-long lie?
