"Sway" average Dems into turning on the "loser".

John McCain tried to run an honorable campaign (for the most part, if you follow the story of Game Change etc.) and lose (which in that case was a good thing, of course Palin was willing to do dirty work). But the precedent is there for winning dirty in American politics...

That doesn't mean I would have agreed with President Kerry if he had elected to be as conciliatory to the right as Obama has, but anyone in America would have preferred to see Kerry win in hindsight... anyone except the average person who hates "losers" and "softhearted" individuals.
