2. All politics begins at that local level.

The school board members become city council members, county supervisors or commissioners and then state house representative and state senators. From there, they can move on to the House and Senate on a national basis.

By working in local politics and making sure that your local offices are filled with progressives, you set the table for future progress. It takes time, and we've dropped the ball on the local level in many places across the country.

Getting involved in local politics is how you can make the largest possible impact as an individual. In fact, if you like, you can run for office at the local level. Become the political leader you want to see in office. Work hard in local politics, become known to local voters and you are on the road to becoming an elected leader yourself.

Of course, that's for younger people than myself. At age 69, I'll have to settle for working locally to try to help select the very best possible candidates in my local area. And that's what I'm doing.

If you want your ideas to become how the nation is run, start near where you live and work to make a difference.
