(14,733 posts)I get to select from every candidate offered in the general, of any party. And vote in the primaries on candidates my party decides to run. And I'm not an 'Independent'. Independent is either the correct term for someone who doesn't belong to a political party, or a slur on those who belong to parties other than the Democratic or Republican. Greens are not 'independents', they're 'Greens', Democratic Socialists are Democratic Socialists, not 'independents'. Independents are people who don't belong to a party. Calling people who belong to other parties 'independents' is simply a way to insult them or show ignorance, although most of the time it's not worth it to take offense, which is why Bernie doesn't constantly point out his actual affiliation.
