Most of the prolific posters over there are posting for the lurkers, direct confrontation doesn't really persuade the lurkers, arguing around the edges and gentle mocking is a lot more effective. You will virtually never change the mind of the person you are arguing with but there are usually at least five lurkers per poster and often a good many more.

Conservatives ~love~ confrontation, they thrive on it, why put them in an environment they like?
