Most of my age peers, former hippies or wannabe hippies all, are Republicans. Staten Island, a tiny dot of deep red in Blue NYC just reelected an indicted felon, Michael Grimm. Admittedly the local Democrats chose a candidate so godawful that even the Dem leading Daily News could not bring themselves to endorse him but even so it wasn't even close.
There are reachable people in the older white demographic but it takes a good economic populist message to reach them and competent, honest performance in office to keep them. Currently living in New Jersey, competent and honest are not the way I'd describe most of our politicians.
