Especially since Obama was not strong on SS to begin with.

It is very strange to watch the political swings, when half or more of the electorate does not think through the implications of their vote or party. On the other hand, maybe it is a smart move (channeling Hillary) to let the swing go the other way to make the populace want something different (again), in 2016. These are difficult times, with everything that was dumped in Obama, mainly the middle east wars, and the economy/banking fiasco. I credit him with launching some kind of national health care policy. On the banking and war front, I'd say he is slightly better than Bush.

I suspect that regardless of a president's personal ideals, the reality of options is laid out in front of him.
