8. It's not that simple.

There's a number of pieces of "must pass" legislation that needs to get done before the end of this Congress, and the days are limited due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas recesses. Much of that legislation requires the cooperation of the Republicans both in the Senate and House. Trying to steamroll the Republicans on the nomination, particularly with so many lame duck Democratic senators, will result in demonstrable push-back and the expenditure of very limited political capital. Also, Reid will very soon be in the minority. If unnecessarily angered now, Republicans could make his and the rest of the Democratic Senate minority lives a hell as punishment.

Simply, the president will have to soon compromise with the Republicans concerning all executive appointments. If he tries to ignore them now, they'll quickly return the favor even when it concerns totally uncontroversial nominees.
