(3,732 posts)I was disheartened this week by reading about the early women's suffrage movement.
Before women's suffrage, women did stand for the more "social" views: health and safety, protecting the family and children, food and shelter, helping the poor in general, community issues... - women were perceived as being "naturally" more concerned with social well-being than men. The question was: once women got the vote, would their vote promote the social well-being of the community or would they suddenly become "more like men" simply because they were empowered and vote according to personal interest like men did.
Today I believe we have our answer. Female politicians can be as rabidly rightwing as male politicians. They can be worse.
This makes me think that celebrating the ascension of women in politics just because they are women doesn't cut it anymore.
That woman could be Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann. Bleh.
