(4,835 posts)The military did more for me than I did for it. I was a carpentry/masonry specialist (MOS 96B I think). Built boxes (shipping crates) in Furth Germany for 3 years, then went to Fort Riley to finish up my 4 year enlistment. Joined the guard (tanks) and lived in Manhattan Kansas long enough to get a degree in engineering (16 years later).
I got to see the world, it helped me get a good education and it got me away from my little one horse town (which frankly, now that there is Facebook and I can see what they're up to) is the biggest asset that I got from serving.
The country doesn't owe me any debt of gratitude. I wish there was a program where one could learn skills that benefit people and then have them perform that skill, rather than training young people to kill.
