(130,669 posts)It's called distributing risk. Oh, wait, "distributing" is too big a word. Anyhow, it's like this. We all pay into a fund. That money is invested so it makes more money while claims wait to be paid. Somebody gets sick or injured. That person might be old, but he or she could be young. Young people get sick or injured, too. Somebody else does not get sick. So that not-sick somebodies are paying for the sick somebodies. But the not-sick somebodies will get old, too (if they're lucky), or they will be crossing the street and get run over by a bus. You never know. So just because you aren't old or sick now, doesn't mean you won't be some day. Of course if only the wealthy could get medical care the not-rich sick people would either (a) die, or (b) be a drag on society because they couldn't work or support their families. Kind of like before the ACA.
