Ohio 'heartbeat' bill re-emerges for panel vote

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Stringent abortion restrictions resurfaced for a committee vote in the Ohio House on Thursday, leading to raised voices and pounding gavels at a hastily-called hearing.

The so-called heartbeat bill was a late addition to the House Health Committee's calendar and was scheduled for a vote before lunch. The bill would restrict most abortions at the first detectable fetal heartbeat, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

Abortion rights advocates attacked the measure as unnecessary, dangerous and misogynist, and the American Civil Liberties Union warned it would draw an immediate, costly legal challenge if passed.

Some lawmakers called abortion murder and defended their right as public servants to protect human life....
