Because this is a national institutional problem that has continued even after Emmet Till was killed. One person mentioned that there is some irony there. She said she thinks that murder was the catalyst for the civil rights movement. There have been a lot of has changes. President Obama's presidency has revealed much of what hasn't, but the fact that he's there is significant to say the least.

What she was getting at is that the thing that has stayed with us is that catalyst, and it is one of the ugliest modern expressions of racism.
