Some people, when faced with a serious discussion of wide-reaching issues caused by tension between one societal group and another, decide that the first priority is to establish that they certainly aren't part of the problem, no sir.

The message is that they're more concerned about clearing their own names/consciences than about discussing the issue.

This may not have been your intent, but that's how it comes across.
