45. when i hear the phrase "we've made progress" in reference to BO being elected

I always interpreted it to mean that "society" (i.e. the white majority) had progressed enough to elect an African American. I never thought it meant, "wow black folks finally got it together enough to get in the white house" or whatever patronizing drivel.
Have I just been interpreting it differently than everyone else?
