(51,209 posts)There's been plenty of progress in several demographics as to letting go of limiting beliefs and opening up to new possibilities.
My own people have been crabs in a barrel sometimes, telling me that I can't or don't deserve certain ambitions because I'm not white. F that. We could all use some progress. TV and other media have helped show that we can do more than just the few selected careers we have been self limited into before.
I'm American regardless of how I look. I know for a fact that many of my own thoughts of what is even possible for me to go after and achieve has progressed a hell of a lot more than some others since I was born and raised in this country. Several members of my family (including me) are completely baffled as to how I got my current job. Yet here I am. In case you're wondering, affirmative action works against people like me, and most of my jobs I have been the only one with English as a first language up until now. Its almost as if my previous employers have so many people on visas that they don't realize Indian-Americans exist.
