(13,390 posts)I grew up in the 70s and 80s when there were still a lot of growing pains after the Civil Rights act was passed. My school was still voluntarily segregated and I was discouraged from having black friends. Even as a child it bothered me. As I have gotten older and seen some positive movement forward in that interracial friendship were natural and common. I remember in the mid 2000s, I met someone who told me that she disapproved of interracial dating. I had not heard that from anyone fore so many years that I was stunned. After I mentioned it to a couple of people, I started to think she would be a pariah for thinking that way.
When Obama was elected I was elated. And then he took office and the backlash started. I really was dumbfounded to see how racists so many people in this country are. As evidence and incidents continue to acquire, I feel like we haven't even begun to see just how robust and widespread it is.
