In reply to the discussion: MSNBC Viewers Rebel With Their Remotes And Send Morning Joe Ratings Plummeting [View all]Blue Idaho
(5,500 posts)The goal of commercial broadcasting is to deliver you the viewer to the advertisers. Period. The programming is the bait - the commercials are the meat of the matter. Ratings are important because they tell advertisers where to spend their money. Programming may be different but just how different is it really? Not very - and there is a reason for that.
Tied into this delivery system is an unspoken understanding that a complacent brain numb population is good for the corporations who advertise. They don't want broadcasters delivering radically different social views and news. They want the vast majority of the population's biggest dilema to be which flavor of keurig cup to pop into the coffee machine in the morning. So it's as true today as ever - TV is the opiate of the masses.
Look at MSNBC's lineup and chart the programming from crazy conservative to wild eyed liberal - where does it end up? Left leaning? Really? Not over a complete broadcast day. They simply segment the market and deliver programming based on who's watching each time slot. If Joe goes, will he be replaced by a truly liberal voice? Of course not - we don't have truly liberal voices on the TV machine. People have to search those voices out in what we lovingly call "alternative media." Thats a nice way of talking about the media that is not profitable or effective for national big brand corporate advertisers.
What does my heart good is to see tens of thousands of protestors out in the streets following the continued tragedies of killer cops and a crooked Justice system. Something tells me we are just seeing the tip of a very large iceberg. Personally, I think there are plenty of ordinary citizens who are just plain fed up with the way the elite are running this country for the 1%ers and screwing the little guy at every possible turn. I know it's freezing cold most place but my hope is that we see hundreds of thousands of protestors in the streets. Nothing scares the corporate ruling class like lots and lots of angry peasants in the streets. Frankly these "job creators" have no one to blame but themselves. They gutted the middle class and are busy forcing everyone into serfdom so I say it's about time we handed out the torches to the peasants and joined them in the streets.
