(44,176 posts)John Tyler was b. 1790 during Geo. Washington's Presidency. Widower Tyler remarried in 1844 to Julia Gardiner of NY, 20 years his junior, and 5 years older than his eldest daughter. She and T. had more children. Tyler d. 1862.
One of their sons, Lyon Gardiner (1853-1935), also had a late second marriage in 1921 when he was age 68. He sired two sons at age 71 and 75, Lyon Jr. (1924- ) and Harrison R. (1928- ). As of 2013 these two grandsons of Pres. Tyler were living. So their father lived through the Civil War and WWI. Their grandfather, Pres.Tyler lived through the War of 1812 and the start of the Civil War. Three generations in 223 years.
Those older men with late marriages took place we know. As a little girl my Mother saw the old veterans, North and South in Phila. and Richmond. My paternal great-great grandfather was a Civil War soldier. The Last Confederate Widow, Lucy Marsden was the subject of a book and movie in the 1980s, 1990s. At age 15 in 1900 she m. a CW veteran Capt. age 50. At around 99 years old she was interviewed by the book author.
