(6,452 posts)The democratic party and its functionaries are, as usual, lagging behind the people on the ground who did the real work, but are happy to come along and lap up the credit because they said some nice words a few years ago. All politicians have always said some nice things a few years ago.
Wealth gap - credit goes to OWS and organizers who have been working tirelessly for years to raise the issue. I'd say George W and the banksters did more to bring this to light by crashing the economy in the first place.
LGBT issues - again, this is all due to the organizational efforts of many small groups.
Racism - I think society is backsliding on this issue. "We have a black president, racism is over now!" Millennials especially are bored of racism and pretend it has basically been solved, and are firmly against affirmative action due to this. The common answer to any sort of social outrage is "both parties are wrong, get over it and make peace so I can go back to my iphone apps". And I say this as a millennial.
Obamacare sucks but is a very, very small step in the right direction. It is like the first cut in a surgical procedure. If we stop there, it's basically just a stab wound.
Obama's major accomplishments include stabilizing the economy through fiscal conservatism, and projecting an image of having addressed problems which he has done nothing about. This is an important function in a president and Obama has done it very well.
