And how, exactly, was it wasting the cashier's time? Not everyone celebrates Christmas and people shouldn't assume everyone else is in the majority.

OTOH, the cashier was very likely just following orders from above. Having once worked retail, I know that practically our every movement in dealing with the public is scripted. At least it was where I work. We were told what to say when first dealing with the customer and what to say at the end.
