(52,304 posts)drive to remove suspected "race-baiters" from DU a few years back were also 2nd Amendment proponents. I'm not saying they were trolls. I think they were Democrats who were blue dogs who wanted to win elections in the South, and they felt that giving race issues a prominent place on DU would scare off the Southern vote. Unfortunately, this strategy seemed to be absorbed, even by progressives, who still hadn't developed an ear for unfiltered opinions written by minorities. And as a member of a minority group, I know you know what I mean. We all learn early not to come across as too angry for fear of being written off as a militant.
All that changed after Trayvon Martin and Sandy Hook. Our sense of injustice finally had a focal point that everyone could agree on. Those two incidents woke up the true progressives on this board and the pendulum began to swing. What I found the most reassuring, was to see how the Feminist groups on this board came to the aid of the AA members to help protect their voices. It was an amazing event to watch.
We just need to be patient-a little longer. Let's face it, they will begin to listen eventually because the number of minority voters in this country, when galvanized, can win elections. Now all we need is to find someone that they can believe in.
