(24,958 posts)but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he pushed for this in order to avoid a government shutdown rather than because he's a soulless corporate shill for Wall Street. And, as far as the larger issue of the Democratic Party goes, no single President, no matter how progressive he/she is, is going to be able to do much if they don't have a large progressive (super-)majority to muscle things through. A Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren may scream bloody murder at Republicans for their behavior and may get a few more people's attention but, at the end of the day, they aren't going to make Republicans stop being Republicans any more than President Obama will and vote our way. If we really want some change, we need to hold the WH and elect so many (progressive) Democrats to the Congress that Republicans have virtually no leverage at all, like what has happened to the Democrats here in Indiana.
