The New Left reminds me a lot of the Old Left at the beginning of the seventies. They appropriated a well-coordinated amalgam of groups dedicated to social justice, turning it into a Culture of Cliques, thereby flipping the movement on its head. No longer a political tsunami, there remained splinters of exclusive fraternities - among them partying anarchists, egotistical fashionistas, red snobs and faux communists (some of which became religious cults, some and others of which became rightwing survivalists). Missing from these remnants were minority participants, who continued their struggle without the middle-class white punks who had peeled away to enjoy only the style and fuck the substance.
I'll continue to harp on this until the last string is broken. There is no noticeable leftwing political movement in this country. There are, instead, Klaque Kings and Kweens who commingle, puffing their chests in a show of Kewl. They don't give one tiny shit about anything other than their self-absorbed little egos. Not privacy, not war, not economics, not the environment and certainly not minorities.
Though I've never needed evidence, it was provided to me by a Facebook friend who was decrying the lack of black faces at a weekly protest of the Beavercreek, OH police killing of John Crawford. Imagine that! A rally of a dozen, organized and communicated by and to a group of white, reliable, protest junkies, and not one black face! I'd like to say that my response was sardonic, but I felt nothing more than embarrassment and pity.
So real activists - those with a focused cause and legitimate grievance - are given more than short shrift by the perpetually (and purposefully) perturbed. Those activists are dismissed because they've failed some purist manifesto by only demonstrably giving a shit about their own community.
Well fuck the Emotarians and nostalgic hippies. They are not your allies.
