Apparently, the idea is as follows:
1) Person X is known to have planted a nuclear device in Los Angeles
2) By torturing X it is known that Antonin Scalia can determine where the bomb is and thus save the lives of several tens of millions of people.
3) Antonin Scalia has no compulsion about violating person X in any manner whatsoever in order to heroically save all these lives.
4) But if Antonin Scalia has reason to fear facing legal sanction of his use of torture, he will simply opt to save his own skin and let the tens of millions of people die.
Thanks for clearing that up for me, Tony.
You are vastly less valuable to society than sewage odor.
