I don't see any good choices for the police, only bad, worse and horrible and I damn glad I'm not the one having to make these decisions.
I am very aware that real people are involved and that the police and the elected officials in charge have to make the best choice for the community as a whole. The problem right now, is that for better or worse, people are reacting to these incidents based on their emotions. If that was my kid, relative or friend, I'm not likely to react well watching him die a graphic death even if he was pointing a gun that he was holding in his hand.
Perhaps the best choice would have been to find a neutral party respected by all involved who could have watched the entire video and stated to the public that the police are not lying and that they understood and fully agreed with not releasing the unedited tape at this point in time.
