(135,425 posts)The appropriate term for food preparers used to be "Mess Management Specialist." MS in abbreviated parlance. It was updated to the fancier, schmancier "Culinary Specialist" or CS in 2004 or thereabouts. I guess the reason they changed it is because people were too thick to understand that the term "mess" had to do with meals at sea and had been used for CENTURIES of Naval heritage, and were pouting about having a specialty that some might think was messy, or something.
Stewards in the old days were mostly POC (Black or Filipino) and they functioned as cooks and personal assistants and cabin attendants. That whole 'personal servitude' element went mercifully out the window and the job was professionalized.
I've never known a non-LDO ensign to be trusted with by direction authority, never mind a weapon...but whatever.
