In the 70's mess cooks were called mess cooks ,I dono there may have been an officiated title to it. Stewart and cook were combined to form culinary specialist.I imagine officers cooks is now a matter of assignment .I may have been thinking of a cookie assigned to officers mess who let the gold go to his head and perhaps began to see himself as an jr. officer ,an ensign.You know the wish fulfillment thing.

Ryan clearly couldn't see himself as a gunners mate or a bos'n mate I imagine ensign may have seemed more-so fitting to the occasion he was fabricating ,I think.
I know in the Navy gunners mates keep charge of small weapons and maintain the big guns-GMT's the nukees. Bosn's are trained in landing party operations and will have small arms training for that particular assignment. There was no mention of a weapons officer in Ryan's story down the avenues of the chain of command. He seemed to confine his story to command status ,him as an ensign and his commander. So sure plenty of holes in his story.

Reviewing his posts and looking at the pics he posted and his usage of emma cons you really have consider it does look as though he stepped out of the comic book world and wrote himself out a hero script.
Every now and again mostly in port some prankster would pick up the ships 1mc mike and shout in some type of obscenity or other than hang it up and run and hide. An act of rebellion I suppose. But of course that was 30 years or more ago maybe that sort of thing doesn't happen anymore. You know, they all wised up right ?

No I think the truth is they just keep coming from one generation to the next. There is a thing called maturity so most of them grow out it. Some never do though.

For the first 60 posts or so Ryan seemed to be on top of his game,but than suddenly the tide changed.

And anybody what doesn't believe he is who and what he says he is can go to hell,that is what he said.
So now he's given DU administration an ultimatum-erase this thread or he will shoot himself in the foot,no I mean delete himself. I have no idea where shoot himself in the foot, figuratively of course not literally came from, why,it just showed up !

Look Ryan really struck a nerve with a retired Boatswains mate senior chief petty officer who happens to write about coast Guard history and he got slammed for telling those lies. He can delete himself here if wishes but he cannot erase those lies.

Several former and active Coast guardsman came aboard as the saying goes and set the record straight and thats it.
