(15,431 posts)I am in my late 40s.
I had my political awakening during the early/mid 90s, and was absolutely mystified at the people around me, decent and smart, who were completely in the mental grasp of Rush Limbaugh.
And, during the 90s, they did in fact make a VERY STRONG effort to package their bullshit into SOME kind of veneer of legitimacy - they crowed about the constitution and had some well crafted rationale to backup their positions.
Today, they have reversed positions so many times they don't even really know what they "stand for" and it is just wake up in the morning, figure out what everyone is screaming about and scream about it, even if it completely contradicts what they were screaming about the day before.
And, yes, the Ryans, the Rand Pauls ... These guys now know the utter bullshit the republicans have been spewing for decades as REALITY.
That said, the country I see around me ... People are so distracted and comfortable, they believe in the evil liberal boogyman, regardless of how senseless that narrative is - be it the PC thing, be it the welfare thing, be it immigration ...
SO, they have learned, scream loud and hard, have a boogyman to demonize and the sheeple will go along with what they are selling 50+ percent of the time.
