I am sure that it must have been hard on him growing up that his father wasn't around, but it is a tribute to his mother's child-rearing skills that you can tell that this is a man who is comfortable around women. He doesn't need to assert his masculinity all the time (in contrast to the insecure war-mongers in the Republican party). This, I think, is part of the reason that he is not vulnerable to the pressure to use the military every time there is a foreign policy crisis: he is at ease with himself.
