WW2, my bad! My husband's boss keeps sending him far-right nationalist reading material (the guy knows I'm foreign but admires the U.S., Americans are okay because they're strong and beat Japan in the war, other foreigners not okay, especially Chinese and Koreans -- they're all criminals and have garlic breath). My mother-in-law confessed that if I'd been blonde it would've freaked her out too much and she didn't think she could've accepted me. It's always something...
