In reply to the discussion: Norwegian student risks 35 years in jail in the US - made a wrong turn [View all]Eikers
(11 posts)The Norwegian newspaper VG follows up this case today with an interview with his mother. They also broadcast live video from court as I write this. So for those of you who don't believe this story to be real, I just want to say that this is going on right now. I would however point out that the initial translation in this thread is not really a translation of the original article but rather a resume of the story. The actual article is far more detailed and professionally fashioned.
I believe that the current media interest is founded on two things: The rather unreal nature of the story combined with the absence of local media coverage - sort of implying that this is nothing out of the ordinary - just a foreign troublemaker.
The more I read the more I am amazed. I just heard on the webcast one of the witnesses demand the judge for maximum penalty because she felt that the defendant had no regard for the lives of others. I find it rather shocking to make a claim for decades of imprisonment in a case were nobody really got hurt.
