I know all about the other programs - I actually LIVE in Florida, and have raised my grandson, on my own, since he was about three or four. He is now 19, and I am living on my Social Security.
He had his eyes operated on (for muscle and nerve problems), and got hearing aids through this program. When he was very young. Back then the premium, for us, was $90 a month. A couple of years ago, when he needed new hearing aids, we got on that six month wheel, trying to get to the waiting list in time. Took three tries. And then he was too old.
It's only human nature to want to get something for free and when you are dealing with millions of people, the abuse rate is enormous. I truly hope the kids who do need it get help they need but unfortunately I know first hand by seeing my able bodied friends and family members take money that a real person needs.
I am so sorry that there are "welfare queens" in amongst your friends and family, but that is no reason to jettison an entire insurance program for poor kids. Poor people need health care. They want it for their children.
To jettison health care for poor children just because of your friends and family is pretty low. Maybe you just need better friends and family. Why don't you turn them in? There is a place to do that, right on the Florida Access website home page.
