(51,292 posts)I've seen it in situations where everyone was white except me, and they assume I must be guilty of something.
I've seen it in situations even with white girls I've been in romantic long-term relationships with. When I approach them outside at night or something to greet them and they scream if they don't recognize me. A nearly blind disabled white woman I encountered recently was having trouble crossing the street and she screamed when I verbally asked if she needed any help. That scared me, so I quickly walked away. She refused help from a woman of color who offered to help as well.
Any of them could have easily shot me dead and got away with it for self defense.
That sort of fear is more widespread than people think, even in very liberal neighborhoods full of very educated people.
Something just like this has happened to me as well:
