this was where my mind went to, as well. Of course, Nixon was only a candidate at the time. TV was thought to be too lowbrow for a real President to sully himself with in those days.
President Obama was raised as part of a generation that took TV for granted, and for him, it's natural to do a bit of comedy there when it makes a point.

IMHO, Obama was a "cool dude" while the Rethugs exposed themselves for who and what they are.

Yes. He was a candidate. It was around the time of the Democratic primaries in '92, I believe.

My point was that candidates and presidents were using TV to campaign in the 20th century.
