6. I think he was just using the position as a springboard to run for President.

I'm not in Massachusetts, but my understanding is that he did not run for a second term because he wanted to run for President. That's one reason he was so unpopular by the end of his term -- he spent too much time out-of-state preparing for his presidential run.
