There are so many other ways that kid could have paid his debt to society. A little jail time with a fine, extensive counseling, sentencing him to lots of community service and finding him a real paying job would have gone a long way toward helping him restart his life on the right path to becoming a productive member of society.
They could have helped him get on his feet with a start toward a decent, meaningful life. Instead, he's likely doomed to a life of crime, bitterness and failure as a pawn of the for-profit prison system. Like the Hotel California, once in, you can never leave.
He was only 17. Depressing.
