It draws on a principle of taking a suffering person's focus out of himself and helping him to provide care for others. That doesn't mean making him unaware of himself, far from it, self awareness part of the process. There is, however an expansion of the suffering person's emotional horizon and an empowerment by the help that he provides to another creature or person. It is a powerful process. There are a number of programs based on that principle, and all of them work very well.
