(55,884 posts)While thug has a specific meaning, when used in discussions about African-Americans it can take on a more nefarious meaning. It doesn't mean the word is "wrong" or shouldn't be used, but it has evolved to have certain connotations. This is the same with "Zionism." Though, we slightly disagree, because I see Zionism to include the continued existence of the nation of Israel, which is why when I see "anti-Zionist", it raises my hackles. However, we are in complete agreement that "Zionist" is often a dog-whistle, code word for "Jooooos!" I often note how many really tip their hands when they talk about "Zionists" and when a non-Jew "pro-Israel" person is invoked, they are called a "CHRISTIAN (or other)" Zionist.
I was referring to the "Arabs are Semites" though so they are victims of anti-Semitism. Someone actually started a thread on it.
