(46,436 posts)in conjunction with our (then) bipartisan majority in the legislature. The law was called ACES, Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share. The law allowed Alaska to ride out the recession relatively unscathed. Sean Parnell appeared to support it as he finished up her term, but as soon as he won his first full term, he took steps to repeal the law and replace it with our current system which has resulted in the state paying more in incentives to Big Oil than it's taking in in revenue. Before he became lieutenant governor, he had been a lobbyist for ConocoPhillips and he was also an attorney with the law firm that represented EXXON during the spill litigation. He is a member of Club for Growth and ALEC. He was so bad as governor that a lot of people here said that they missed Sarah (at least OLD Sarah), as hard as that is to believe.
Sean lost his re-election bid in November, and we now have an Independent (formerly Republican) governor and Democratic Alaska Native lieutenant. They're still pro-development, but I imagine they'll be seeking some changes to the tax scheme.
