It's sad that we have so few cultural bonding rituals --& that this one is so commercially manipulative. I have nothing against sports and certainly there is skill in football, but I don't like what I see in this phenomenon as a super-hyped, super profitable mass cultural conditioning device.
That's what's super about it. Way way way overblown.
The urge to root for a home team comes from early patterning, where sports are promoted to a ridiculous degree, instilling an aggressive "us vs them" attitude (works well when you want to sell wars). Children learn that these games mean everything. It has negative impact.
There's a thin line between this and Idiocracy. Welcome to Zombie Weekend.
