(12,672 posts)I was an enlisted may in that unit at the same time. The facts are that he quit making drills for an extended time. If I or any of my fellow techs had done the same we would've been activated into the Army or Marines tout de suite and deployed in Vietnam. I transferred out of that unit to one in another state. The procedure is to be discharged from your 1st unit and to get accepted into the new unit. You have 45 days from the time of discharge to enlistment in the new unit. I did this twice as I transfered back to the 147th in Houston. Bush just didn't show.
While he was away AWOL the Houston unit changed from F-102 interceptors to F-101 Voodoo interceptors. He didn't want to learn the new plane which was not a problem for all the other pilots. They all qualified in short order. I have doubts that he ever flew the F-102 solo but maybe just went up in the 2 seater TF-102 with an instructor. Of all the pilots I have met he is the only one to voluntarily quit flying.
Its all a bit dodgy.
This man has made a career of lying and failing and being propped up again by his Daddy's friends.
