One in three retired football players has mild cognitive impairment or other neurological issues (which is higher than the rate for boxers, in fact). We're only now starting to understand the risks involved, really; the science wasn't there until a few years ago (mostly because it wasn't in the NFL's interest to do any research). When people ranging from former NFL players to the president are saying "if I had a son, I wouldn't let him play football" and an increasing number of parents with school-age kids are saying the same thing, the sport has a problem in years to come, I'd say.
