79. Ah, but there was evidence of long-term problems.

It's just that most of the evidence was in professional boxers, not in football players. (Think of Jerry Quarry, for instance.) And the problem isn't just from concussions, it's also from sub-concussive hits. An NFL game averages 130 plays a game, for sixteen games a year plus the post-season; that adds up. They're taking steps to treat concussion as a more serious problem (now that they've been faced with the medical evidence and had to cough up a lot of $$$ in a lawsuit); time will tell if it's enough (but in the meantime the reduction in kids going into football will have an effect about 5-10 years down the line).
