(14,337 posts)Grew up in Manhattan. Never knew a kid who had polio. Did not know any other children who died, were hospitalized, or had serious complications from measles, mumps, german measles, or chicken pox. NONE of those vaccinations were around in the 50s. I was in school by the time the sugar cube polio vax came around.
Maybe NYC is the key, even back then. City kids, while unvaccinated, had access to a lot of doctors and hospitals. From where we lived we could have walked to a hospital if need be. However, these diseases were considered no big deal. Must not have been any outbreaks of polio in my neighborhood because I do not remember any quarantine signs. I started school in 1956 so would have been old enough to remember that.
I do not deny that a child living in a rural area back in those days would have been at a disadvantage.
