Well before the chickenpox vaccine became available.
I'm sure others will echo this story: my parents made a conscious effort to expose me and my siblings to virus while we were young, knowing full well what it can do to adults.

I had chicken pox. No measles though. Of course, now I have to worry about shingles.

Yeah, my dad got it then and ended up extremely sick. Before I was born. but my aunt told me.

had measles and mumps but no chicken pox. our fam seems to have some immunity to it as kids

Sensitivity to light is common with measles. So moms just did it without bothering to ask.

At 65, I had them all. Measles (both kinds) mumps, chicken pox. You name it we got it.
